On The Walking Dead - even though I wasn’t able to see the whole season -
Dudes
and Lady Dudes …?*
You are an Agrarian society now. Or, rather, you should be, if you’re thinking of living to see your kids have kids. Y'know, continuing the species and all.
Those men that you see, disenfranchising you because they are walking around carrying guns, while you work? Yeah, those men should be clearing land. Building an actual fence, not just the tin cans on string you apparently threw up.

Now, if you’re taking the time to put up a real fence, you’re taking the time to ask yourself, “why am I staying here”? And the answer there is somthing like, “idiot, food grows on trees, but not enough to feed your family”. You’ll also probably figure out your patch of the woods is horrible for growing anything.**
You need to find a farmhouse. The dead in it? Clean it out. The living in it? Oh, look, people who actually may have some idea how to grow food. They are going to need workers. They got a combine? Yeah, they may want to save the Diesel for the planter instead, don’t you think?
Image: Actually, this corn is may be livestock food. Hey, you can eat it.
Your biggest worries here, depending on where you are, are where water is coming from, and where heat is coming from in the winter.
Now, you’re going to have plenty of kindling this year, with the out of control lawns - but be careful. There is some land you want to keep clear of trees. There is other land you want trees to grow, for a continuing supply of firewood and lumber (eventually) in relatively close proximity. And hey - there’s always the chance for more and better fences.
Water is all about pre-existing conditions. Collecting rainwater will probably help. In the best case, you will have a well with the possibility of a manual pump. Don’t think it will last forever. As for filtering water, You want simple systems. Systems that can be repaired and replaced with items on hand. Have you heard of Clay Pot Filters?
image: Warning: this is not a gardening pot. Knowledge of local clay and coffee ground deposits recommended.
In conclusion … pray it doesn’t start on the back of a winter flu.
